When we would hear the term ‘bad posture,’ one thing we tend to remember in mind is our childhood days. We were told to stand up straight, to avoid slouching, our shoulders straight, etc, etc! but how many of us have carried this philosophy forward into our adult life and apply the value of good posture? May be 2 of our classmates? Or None? Unfortunately, many of us didn’t listen to that advice, not minding such reminder because all we have been doing is to play, and so what happens to us now? We are actually burdened with the health problem
s that bad posture is giving us. We are also struggling to get away with the impairment of our self esteem and confidence.
There are a lot of factors why such bad posture in the back happens, sometimes, it’s your way of living that can be put to blame, but there are times that it is beyond our control.
Fatigue
Sometimes, we are pressured with life’s changing world. We cope up with work and even staying late at night or 24/7 just to finish everything at school. When we would go to the gym, we want to lose weight there and then, so what we usually do is to work out beyond our limits. Admit it or not, our life is always on a rush, too rush that we are not able to mind those simple things in the world around us that can give us a reminder that they are beneficial. All these and more, a combination of rush life plus absence of knowledge of the correct way of moving our body can caused feeling of fatigability resulting from an overworked body which is a NO-NO.
Foot Placement
How we position our feet is also a big deal. No matter how you keep your spine straight, but if the feet are not in its natural position, your back will still suffer. A more typical position is that the feet are rolling inward which allow the knees to bend and the back to slouch. If your feet are kept in that position, it can weaken and tire your body.
Age
Bad posture in the back is common among elderly. As you age, those muscles at the back, shoulders, and neck will also lose its function slowly in supporting the body’s weight. As such, it is harder to maintain a good posture. Your lower back is not anymore fully supported causing pain and overly curved back. You can even see elderly people like that of a hunchback or more likely slouched back? That’s a normal occurrence that comes with age and it is not our control. As such, when you are still young enough, get some moves and prevent an advance occurrence of this.
Of all these factors that can trigger bad back posture and these can be of 3 different forms, such as:
- Kyphosis
Kyphosis is the excessive curvature of the thoracic spine which causes a “C” shape. What usually happens here is that the curvature causes the lower part of the spine to flex. The shoulders become round and more forward and the pelvis is moved slightly backwards causing the buttocks and chest muscles to shorten and tighten which can be very painful. - Lordosis
This is an excessive curvature on the lower part of the spine. This type of back posture can compress the back elements of the spine which can commonly cause lower back pains. This is common to pregnant mothers and obese people.
- Flat back
If the two types have an excessive curves, this kind of back has a loss of one or more normal curves of the spine. The spinal curves are used to bear weights, and any reduction of these can cause pain and weakness of the back.
What are the negative EFFECTS of bad posture of the back?
Increased Injury Risk
Having such bad posture can give you a high risk to injury state. When you do some squats, lunges, bends or other weight lifting activities, you are putting more strain to your back especially when not done properly. You are just making your back condition worse, adding more injury to the back.
Increased Bone Problems
When you have a bad posture in the back, the tendency is, bone problems can occur due to the body’s weight giving much pressure on the bone. If you are not standing up straight, the gravity may be felt and carried on by the spine which then weakens and damages the bone.
Decreased Height Growth
This is also very true to people with bad posture. you cannot reach the maximum height potential when you are assuming a bad posture when you were younger while growth is still taking place because the muscles of the back may become shortened thus permanently locked into that position. So, you just do not look short, but you are actually not growing like that of others because of your posture.
Increased Appearance of Body Fat
If you have been desiring to lose weight, one thing to note is the ability to straighten the body because with straight posture, your tummy and chin fats are not evident compare to slouching that allows stomach protrude making you more big.
Decreased Exercise and Sport Performance
Finally, the last consequence and effect of having bad back posture is decreased ability to go into sports and routine workout exercise. When you are always used to do bad posture, your breathing will compromise, thus doing some exercises can make you catch your breath. Your strength and endurance will actually suffer. Fatigue is very common especially when you attempt doing high intensity exercises, and more so with back pain. You can be stopped with back pain while exercising.
